Oxford is the oldest university in the UK and the second in Europe, yielding to the University of Bologna. Oxford’s first college opened in the early 13th century, but before the 1878s there were no students in the university. Oxford currently has 38 colleges, and one of the most famous student is former British Prime minister Margaret Thatcher, who graduated from university’s Somerville college. During the Second World War, Oxford was not bombed, like Hitler, having conquered England, intended to turn Oxford into the capital.
Oxford University topped the ranking of the best universities in the world in 2017 and 2018, which is published by the Times Higher Education magazine (THE). They say Oxford is a prominent place to become a writer.
Famous writers such as John Ronald Reuel Tolkien author of ”The Lord of the Rings”, Oscar Wilde, Louis Carol “Alice in Wonderland”, Clive Staples-Lewis “The Chronicles of Narnia” all studied and worked under the walls of Oxford as students. Oxford is also known for actors, for example, Rowan Atkinson, the performer of Mr. Bean. Well-known actress Emma Watson also studied at Oxford.
